blogs are so noughties

wow, 6 weeks without a blog post. everythign i do now is posted through twitter for updates or flickr photos/vids.

I seem now to reserve blog posts soley for my technical posts which i know annoys some of you. I'm looking to move onto WordPress in the new year, or when my designer gets his arse into gear.

We just got back from a great trip in Northland.

Oh, and we just got a new car, a gorgeous, sexy Toyata Corolla 2009 Wagon. That's right a Station Wagon, COOL OR WHAT!?

A very merry Christmas and New Year to one an all.

Not content with being 8 months pregnant and busily putting together loads of albums for clients and looking after tommy, Annabel has succeeded in putting together a brilliant exhibition of her work at the Coco Espresso cafe/restaurant in Thames.

Quick update

Just a quick post, 1.31am and the rain is battering down outside. I’m up late squishing bugs for another site launch tomorrow and am enjoying the benefits of our new air con system that was put in last week. Went to a parents evening at the day care centre today. Was really tired and wasn’t really feeling like it but it was really great to hear other people and the teachers talk about Tommy. When i got back i told him how proud I was of him and he looked really chuffed with himself and told me loads of stories about what he does at nursery. Normally he says “nothing” when i ask him what he’s been doing (i know, and he’s only 2).

A new car!

Here is our new car, a 2003 Nissan March (Micra in UK). Got it online at www.turners.co.nz, quite exciting buying a car online to be honest. I haven't got a clue about cars and have never driven an automatic before but it seems to work ok. All the manuals are in japanese so that's useful. I am so COOL!

New Job at Marker

Well, it's not often i have to resort to the obligatory 'sorry it's so long i've posted a blog entry', but you know blogging is so naughties, we should all be twittering now right? Or is it the saddest thing ever?

When i pointed out to my wife that there are over 6 million users of twitter she responded that there's easily enough total geeks in the world to account for that number, fair enough.

Anyway, after a fun and challenging year at www.practiv.com putting together an enterprise service layer (that does sound posh now doesn't it?) underneath www.telecombusinesshub.co.nz i have decided to go back to my roots and join a very exciting and cool web agency over in Ponsonby called Marker (www.markerstudio.com, new website coming soon i'm told!).

I'll be the development manager there overseeing the output of the techie people there, interfacing with clients, designers and other assorted webbie types. Very excited and lots of interesting meaty and high profile projects to kickstart the year.

I'll be starting my new venture on March 2nd and would like to bud a fond farewell to all and sundry who might have bumped into me during the last year and who i will probably not be seeing for a while.

Christmas 2008

It's been a really great Christmas so far. Aside from lounging around i've actually done some useful 'proper husband' work in the real world...

  • made a herb garden (oregano, thyme, rosemary, parsley and coriander)
  • planted a swan plant (to attract the monarch butterflies) and a mandarin tree (for scool lunches in a couple of years)
  • cut the big hedge next to our house (as it was getting ridiculous)
  • fixed 3 plugs (as using the uk adapters was annoying me for years)
  • cleaned all the terracotta tiles around our house (as they were black)
  • sorted out sand pit
  • bought a cantilever umbrella, twice as first one broke!
  • bought 2 elephant size beanbags (zzzzz...)

I bought a coffee grinder and am having REAL coffee now. Annabel thought the purchase was a bit indulgent until she realised that the list above was only made possible through consumption of at least 4 cups of real coffee per day. Any less, and she would get at least 4 excuses per day..

tommy gets a train set on christmas morning!

well, despite minimal (i.e. none) training me and 'er indoors successfully made it through the 10.55km quarter marathon distance without too much pain. Despite a pre race argument in the car park (told you Carin!) the trust GPS watch allowed us to stick to a steady feeble pace and chomp on home in 1hr 18m, woo hoo, but with NO STOPPING!

A major achievement for me in particular having larded on 7kg this year and done nothing except type loads of stuff on a keyboard for most of the year.

Summer is a comin' and i think we'll be dodging the tamaki drive rollerbladers a bit more over the next few months....

What’s the next piece of open source software that Microsoft should embrace?

After the recent announcement by Scott Guthrie that JQuery would receive official support from Microsoft (http://weblogs.asp.net/scottgu/archive/2008/09/28/jquery-and-microsoft.aspx), many people see that as the heralding of a new dawn.

We missed out on NUnit (MsTest), NDoc (Sandcastle) and NHibernate (Linq to SQL/Entity Framework) for sure, but what do you think should be embraced next?

Post your answer here:

Monetary Reform the only answer to global credit crisis

I believe the problems experienced around the world with the global credit crisis arise from a fundamental problem in our definition of money and the way most modern industrialized nations have structured control over management of the money supply.

Neither Barack Obama or John McCain have any intention of enacting any sort of monetary reform as far as i can tell. Unfortunately, the only person who i think agrees with all this in the US is Ron Paul http://www.campaignforliberty.com/, and i don’t agree with much else of his!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Monetary_Institute

“If money is a commodity to be traded, then all that matters is that the money is 100% backed by some commodity, like gold or silver for example. If money is credit, then it makes sense that bankers control it, as they do in the United States today. But if money is an artifact of law, whose value is derived from law (payment of taxes and legal tender laws) then the Institute argues it would only be proper for the government to issue, and control the money supply.”

http://www.monetary.org/need_for_monetary_reform.html

Monetary reform is achieved in 3 parts which must be enacted together for it to work. Any one or any two of them alone won’t do it, but could actually further harm the monetary situation.

1. First, incorporate the Federal Reserve System into the U.S. Treasury where all new money is created by government as money, not interest-bearing debt, and spent into circulation to promote the general welfare; monitored to be neither inflationary nor deflationary.

2. Second, halt the banks privilege to create money by ending the fractional reserve system in a gentle and elegant way. All the past monetized private credit is converted into U.S. government money. Banks then act as intermediaries accepting savings deposits and loaning them out to borrowers; what people think they do now.

3. Third, spend new money into circulation on infrastructure, including education and healthcare needed for a growing society, starting with the $1.6 trillion that the American Society of Civil Engineers estimate is needed for infrastructure repair; creating good jobs across our nation, re-invigorating local economies and re-funding government at all levels.

REVOLUTION!

My new Job!

New house and new job. I've been at Hyro NZ now since March 2005 and as the old cliche goes it was time for a change. I'm joining a small but growing outfit called Practiv (website is a bit out of date, so I won't bother linking to it just yet) where I'll be heading up the Microsoft/.net services side of things moving forwards. I leave Hyro on Dec 21st and start at Practiv on Jan 7th, before moving into new house on Jan 14th. So, all I'm waiting for now is for Annabel to tell me she's pregnant!

Well, a little bit faster on the clock time at 2hr 17min, but wasn't feeling my best so a bit disappointed as i was trying to beat 2hr 10min

Pictured below are Diarmuid (feeble Movember attempt) and Luke (who has had a beard since he was 3 years old apparently).

18a Houghton Street - Sold!

Well, it was a little nerve-wracking as you can imagine, but we managed to sell our house on the day. Didn't get quite as much as we had planned originally but the market is tailing off just a bit here in Auckland and we reckon that'll work back in our favour as we start to look around now.

We're out on our ears on Dec 21st and will be staying in Coromandel with Annabel's parents for a couple of weeks before hopefully moving into a new place in the new year. We've got a few that we're keen on but nothing definite as yet...

Auckland Half Marathon 2007

Woohoo, did my first half marathon yesterday and it was brilliant! I gave the course a wee bit too much credit and set out quite slow over the first few kms, but picked it up from 8km to get a time of 2hr 10m. I reckon next year i can break the 2 hr mark on that course for sure. People had been going on about the harbour bridge being tough but i found the roads of the north shore from 8-12km harder. I'd only run 16km before the race the week before, but it's amazing how far adrenalin gets you on the day.

4am start, ferry to devonport at 5.30 and race start at 6.30. After the race, annabel, tommy and i went house hunting and by 7pm i collapsed. Have just woken up 13 hours later! Knees are suffering a wee bit...

Tamaki 10KM Run with GPS Thingy

Did a 10K run along tamaki drive again, this time with the GPS wristwatch thingy which was great. Went out with an (ex) marathon runner from work and unfortunately set out at a wee bit of a faster pace than i could maintain across the entire trip. Is great to be able to analyse the whole race, particularly for a geek like me. 58 minutes was the total time with average pace of 10.4km/hr. This is as boring as the tech posts isn't it?

too much geek stuff

oh dear, i fear my blog has taken a turn for the worse. Almost 3 weeks without a post, what is going on!!

As lucy has said in the comments..

"Hello I know your geek stuff is very interesting but.... well.... can you post more pics, videos and news about what you, your good lady wife and very cute son have been up to"

well what can i say, work has been crazy and i have a bunch of photos/vids i simply haven't gotten time to upload yet.

In otherwords, i have a life. Well, a work life that is, consuming every waking second when i'm not apologising to annabel for not getting up in the morning or having the energy to bath tommy, not good. But that is partly why i've been posting all this crap about technology, because some of it is with pretty new stuff and i know i struggled to find stuff on the web about it. Anyway...

Tommy is walking. He is also climbing. His favourite thing is emptying the dishwasher and opening the dvd player, taking out the dvd, opening the bin, and putting the dvd in the bin. He likes spinning on my study chair after his bath and before he goes to sleep. He has curly hair at the back and needs it cut. Even when he's all sweaty and snotty he's still pretty cute. Yesterday he said "bye bye daddy" when i left for work and i cried. He points at everything. He gets annoyed when the neighbour's car makes too much noise. He tells you when he's about to do a poo, sometimes he even squats. He doesn't like avocados, gets that from me. He is not afraid of the bath anymore, but won't sit right down. An empty kleenex box is one of his favourite toys, putting things in, taking them out, shaking it with things inside. I can almost hold his hand when walking without crouching down. He doesn't look where he's going when he walks, this annoys me. He can spot the balloons in his reading books every time, i'm trying to tell him what grapes are, but he still points at the baloon. He sings "up above" when you sing "up above the world so high", and makes a diamond shape when you say "like a diamond in the sky".

Annabel is wonderful wife and a brilliant photographer. She's almost gone completely digital now and is getting more and more portrait work as well as weddings. We'll probably need to put tommy into daycare a couple of days a week soon so she can do all her work. She is very patient with me, and i am very lazy, especially in the mornings.  She is also very cute even when she's sweaty and snotty, which isn't that often.

Will that do lucy?

Weekend in Paihia

After a busy few weeks (i was in Sydney all last week with work) it was great to have a couple of days relaxing up north in the bay of islands courtesy of some asb rewards points we had built up on our credit card. Lots of sleeping and lounging around, could have done with a week of it. unbelievable weather for middle of winter as well. I tell you, that spa pool was awesome;)

Tommy almost walking!

Annabel has asked me to point out that she had just come back from a run when this video was taken and hence looking (unusually i might add) "rather daggy" (to use her own words).

Get your motor running

Ooooh, i like driving far more than i thought i would. I rose at 8am on Satuday morning and drove Tommy to the beach at Piha were he had oranges and bananas. It was a strangely warm lovely day (you gotta love that global warming) and unlike a couple of years ago we arrived and i think it was the coldest winter in NZ for 50 years!

Tommy does a good impresonation of an andrex puppy.

Just a quick note to say that i've finally passed my driving test here in New Zealand. I still have to take another one to get my 'full' license in 6 months, but it means that i can drive on my own now, woo hoo!

Happy Birthday Tommy!

Will post up video and pics after today, here is the naming ceremony stuff. Thanks to Dad, Gaye and Mum for sending pressies from back home!!

Naming Ceremony for Thomas Alan Decorcy Patton

28th April 2007

Celebrant

On behalf of Annabel & Keith, it is my pleasure to welcome you on this very special occasion, the 1st Birthday and Naming Day for their son, Thomas.

Before we start the ceremony, I have been asked to invite Carin & Jim forward as I believe they have a special tribute to make.

Carin & Jim speak

We are gathered here today to formally welcome baby Thomas into his family, to name him and to share with his parents and grandparents, delight and joy in his safe arrival.

The miracle of birth, the creation and arrival of a brand-new human being is both exciting and moving, but it brings awesome responsibilities.

We are here to offer support for those who will take care of him. Bringing a new life into this world is one of the most important things any two people can do.

For many years to come, this child will be dependent on his parents. They are very aware that the way a child is looked after, cared for and loved, will all play a part in determining the sort of adult that child will become.

Annabel and Keith, this child is your message to a time you will never know. Remember that all that you teach him, will be what he teaches your grandchildren and their children. You are continuing a dynasty that was started by your own parents and their parents and this is how it should be. Remember your part in ensuring that he grows to be a good citizen and a good parent when his time comes.

It’s now my pleasure to hand over to Annabel and Keith.

Annabel & Keith speak

From Mum

[to be added]

From Dad

I’ll start with a quote the great Zen Master Suzuki-Roshi once said.

“Everything is perfect, with much room for improvement”

About 5 minutes after Tommy was born I was ushered over to where the baby doctor was doing some measurements. I think the best way to describe the feeling is like winning some huge lottery or finding buried treasure, something like that. I felt an instant change inside, a shedding of skin, a total overwhelming feeling of responsibility, love and intense connectedness to the world.

Everything was perfect, but I certainly felt there was much room for improvement, particular with respect to the inside of my stomach at that point.

Since he looked into my eyes that morning and I into his, we have watched in awe at his growth and development. In terms of parenting, with my many year of experience, I can only offer a single observation.

Having your first child is like a gardener being given a packet of unlabelled seeds. The resultant flora will no doubt have ideal conditions for its growth that will result in its flourishing rapidly towards the sun. However, the gardener must experiment, and guard the growth of the unknown seed with great humility if it is to become as great as its seed dictates.

To that end, our roles as a parents are as of the gardener. Tommy, I will aim to listen, learn, guide and instruct you to become the very best person that you want to be.

As you must discover this path for yourself, I can simply offer you my unlimited support, understanding and love as long as it shall be required. Love, Dad.

Celebrant:

An important tradition in our culture on these occasions is the responsibility accepted by others who taken an active interest in a child’s wellbeing. Annabel and Keith have asked Carin, Jim & Udi to be Life Mentors to Thomas and they have agreed to undertake a special and lifelong interest in Thomas’s welfare. Unfortunately, Udi is unable to be here today, so I’d now ask Carin and Jim to come forward.

Together with Annabel and Keith, now place your hands on Thomas’s head and say these words together:

“Today we name Thomas Alan Decorcy Patton with love.

We dedicate ourselves to care for him

and we promise always to consider his interests.

We will always be aware of how needing of our care

Thomas is and will do our best to raise him as a good person.”

Keith, I ask you to light this candle as a symbol of the path you will light for Thomas. May you keep the light and brightness for his life, allowing him to walk the path of life in his own way, waiting patiently if he stumbles, standing still if he wanders so that he may return and find you there. Pace him as he runs and guide him by example as you walk through the years.

Annabel, please take this balloon. Hold it as you will hold the hand of Thomas as he learns to walk and dream. Before this day is done, release it into the air to travel without attachment. So too, when your baby has outgrown the need for your support and assistance, let him fly without hindrance.

Celebrant:

Thomas, on behalf of everyone gathered here, I congratulate you on your safe arrival and thank you for the joy your first 12 months has given to many. May you grow to be a kind, honest and loving human being, for which all of those gathered here today would be so proud. May you have a peaceful community around you and may you strive to reach your full potential to the best of your ability.

Reading – Thomas’ Grandmother, Gill

May the strength of the wind and light of the sun, the softness of the rain and the mystery of the moon, reach you and fill you.

May beauty delight you and happiness uplift you.

May wonder fulfil you and love surround you

May your step be steady and your arm be strong

May your heart be peaceful and your word be true

May you seek to learn, may you learn to live

May you live to love and may you love always.

Conclusion

Family and friends, may your future with this family be filled with happiness and the delight that Thomas has already brought. May the joy that you hold in your hearts today, remain with you forever.

New GPS Gadget - Garmin Nuvi 660

I've finally booked my restricted license test for May 7th and so in my excitement at being (hopefully) and almost driver in NZ, i've excitedly purchased a new gadget to tell me how to get places, place music and allow me to make hands free calls:

https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?pID=400

http://reviews.cnet.com/Garmin_Nuvi_660/4505-3430_7-32078943.html?tag=lst

It was funny to begin with as we departed from a car park that was almost directly under a highway it wanted me to turn onto, mmm. Aside from that bumpy start, once i'd turned out of the car park it readjusted itself (with a sweet pommy accent from 'Daniel', i wanted 'Emily', tch) and proudly predicted my next turn. Annabel was unconvinved after laughing heartily at it's first suggestion to levitate the car, however it proved her wrong by revealing a short but to the next road. Ah ha! Not to rest on its laurels, we tried to fool it into disaster by suggesting a new location (a Wild Bean station we get our hot chocs at) and it nicely asked us if we wanted to stop there before being directed home?

Wow! Now we were impressed, it had created a way point and again quietly readjusted itself. At the same time it saved our home and the station as favourites which now appear on the maps. There is also the ability to drag your finger across Auckland and select a restaurant to save (we did this for where we are going tomorrow for lunch).

I've got a 2GB SD Card loaded with all our favourite MP3s and it can stream these through our car stereo so no more arguign about who left the cd covers off and why ron sexsmith has ended up in baby jazz cover, again! All our music (well, a lot of it anyways) all on the GPS system.

Oh, and to top it all off, the damn thing links to my phone and gives me the ability to send and recieve calls. It has a pretty impressive list of phone numbers for stuff in Auckland, and i couldn't help wishing i had this functionality on my mobile. I guess that will come, location based stuff is goign to be huge...

Along with our one for all remote, MySky/Sky+/Tivo box, the GPS unit looks set to enter the annals of 'how did we live without that?'.

I've also got a list of New Zealand Speed Cameras (was updated April 2006 so hopefully not too out of date) imported as custom points of interest (POI) on the device, which will flash up if my wife is driving too fast (hey, i'm still a learner!).

Well, now you can with the Speight's Great Beer Delivery. They plan to take a boat full of beer and some people all the way to London to bring Speight's to hard up kiwi mates living in pommy land. Awesome legends, sweet bro!

Stomach Problems Resolved

Oh they joys of having children! Tommy went to his coffee group as normal on Friday only to turn into Exorcist child on Sunday morning and begin puking and pooing himself into oblivion. We were all pretty concerned as he wouldn't eat anything for ages, and then Annabel got it too and was up all night with cramps. I thought i'd gotten away with it until i went into work on Monday before it got me too. Then her Mum and Dad! Then we found out there are at least 2 kids and their parents have it from coffee group too, and one has been daignosed with gastroenteritis .

Anyway, we all seem to be on the mend now, i won't post any pictures;)

mum's arrived!

well well, i have been a lazy little blogger now haven't i? My mum arrived in new zealand last thursday after bravely flying aroundn the world for close on 32 hours. The weather has been lovely since her arrival and she's enjoyed the eastern beaches and all the new plants and birds here in NZ. I've got my new PC up and running which is wonderful, took me 4 hours to build the thing, getting everything just so. My old one is being reconditioned for the lovely mrs patton as her photographic workhorse as she makes the move to digital next year.

Tommy is still a wee treasure and we'll be posting more pics and vids up soon.

Oh, I've joined the gym and have a personal trainer so no more excuses. Going well, aiming to get my flabby butt toned for some boogie boarding over christmas;)

off across the pond

Lots of travel coming up for the missus and myself, she is off to the UK late next month with tommy for 2 1/2 weeks for mrs lucy's wedding in cornwall and to see my mum and dad in n ireland for a few days. I'm off to sydney and brisbane (1 day each unfortunately!) and then melbourne for a few days later in the month, so expect some hopefully sunny winter tourist pics from those places, even if they might be the inside of some office somewhere.

oh, and i appear sadly addicted to rock star supernova, ther, shoot me.

counting down..

annabel went to see the midwife today. tommy has dropped down to his eyebrows in her pelvis and midwife thinks that it will be 1-2 weeks, so he may pop out a little earlier than we thought. Annabel also had her baby shower on Sunday when she received lots of pressies and stuff for the baby. Jim particularly enjoyed the soft synth rendition of Scott Joplin's The Entertainer. Aside from waiting for the baby, Annabel has completed all of her weddings and is trying to relax and not bend over to pick things up. I am still flat out on a project that's been running since before end of last year and will run up until end of May, although i will get a wee break to welcome tommy.

It'll only be Annabel coming back to the UK in August due to overspending on south island trip earlier in year. She'll be going to Lucy H's wedding as bridesmaid and hoppin g over to Belfast to show off Tommy to my Dad, Mum and Gaye. We are both planning a 4 week trip next March/April to make up for the mis-planning and hope to stay off in London for at least a few days to catch up with old friends.

We've had our house painted by Annabel's Mum and Dad who have done a terrific job in the front room and in tommy's room. Everything's looking a lot snazzier now thanks to Gill and David!

branded gear website live

Here's one you can actually look at http://www.liongear.co.nz

This is a site i've developed with the help of Mr Random (Chris Lau) that allows people in NZ to order all sorts of beer gear products from Lion Nathan. It's built off the code base for the 'award winning' online ordering site (www.lion.co.nz).

Have a play and feel free to buy stuff, i particularly like the Lion Red boxer shorts:

patty melts all round

How you diddlin?

Strange thing about NZ gastro pubs, they don't do desserts! After eating a nice T-Bone steak i was informed that there would be no mississipi mud cake on offer as they were a pub, not a cafe. So, we headed round for a late night Hot Fudge Cake at Denny's the 24 diner.

Now Denny's is an odd place. The food looks really appalling but there's a kind of kitsch charm to the whole proceedings. Also, some of the food looks suspiciously conjured by a pissed old man given weekly ingredients and enough beer. For example the 'patty melt' consists of two bits of toasted bread with a burger and some melted processed cheese. Now, i seem to remember eating that in my flat in Leeds in 1992 through a haze of Tetley's bitter.

But, i never thought, wow, it's not just me, other people would love this, not just pissed up food experimenters, let's take a photograph! Let's give it a name! It's the 'patty melt'. I might have one next time....

Each week this old man must surely ring up and babble out some new concoction he's cooked up, only to be heralded as a genius and another badly taken photograph squeezed into the montage of BAD food that is the Denny's menu.

I did enjoy the fudge cake though.

elections and beyond

What a rollercoaster election it was last week (Sep 17th). National storming to an 11% lead and then Labour coming right back and winning (sort if, it's MMP here!) by less than 1%, really exciting stuff.

I've made another collage below but realised after i made it that i've already uploaded some of them before, but i can't be arsed re-doing it. The bottom half shows off my bowling skills and annabel and her parents voting.

House is still main thing going on, goes unconditional on October 7th, moving in on Saturday October 22nd, with a public holiday on the Monday which will give us a chance to get everything moved....

online ordering project reaches nz award finals

Hoorah, my first big project at work has been shortlisted for the Tuanz e-vision awards, NZ's very own webbies! I designed and built the system so am very proud indeed...

http://www.tuanz.org.nz/tuanz/index.cfm?DE770585-E018-8BD1-32F6-D46DDBA21E3D

The project "online ordering" allows Lion Nathan customers to place their booze orders from across NZ and Australia. It's really cool and integrates with their internal accounts and inventory systems whilst retaining a simplicity and ease of use...blah blah blah.

www.lion.co.nz is the adress, but unfortunately it's a customer only site so you can only dream of the sublime functionality locked inside.

Fingers crossed, again! Results announced October 20th 2005.

almost got a new home

After signing the sale and purchase agreement, we are approaching the end of the first week in which we must do all the stuff before the offer goes unconditional. This has included a builders inspection which revealed little more than a wee bit of mould one of the gutters and full market valuation, the results of which we are still to get..

Finance is pretty much all sorted and the bank are happy to make shed loads of money off of us in the next 30 years, so that's cool.

Below is Annabel after the first viewing. The fence is a bit wonky, but we're going to fix that. And i want one of those electronic door lifters for the garage.

There's not much in the house itself so we need to buy beds, washing machine, dishwasher, curtains, pots and pans, cutlery and other home office stuff. The idea is that we do it all up and make a bit of cash in 4/5 years or so. Given that the Auckland house market is not booming as it was a few years back we can't rely totally on the house increasing in value all by itself so we'll need to put the work in.

Nothing is certain yet and we still may well get gazzumped but it's all looking good so far, fingers crossed!

spring is here!

Just about to go out for lunch and have jesters kiwi classic pie and diet coke. It's been the longest delay ever i think from my last blog post, so sorry to my many diehard fans for the interlude.

Big things afoot as Annabel and I are house hunting at the moment which is causing a great deal of excitement. We've decided we want to remain fairly central and so are prepared not to have a huge mansion of a place. More likely is a townhouse/unit with 2/3 bedrooms and walk out to garden. The garden/deck has become very important as this is something we are missing at the moment. Not too fussed about room sizes apart from the main living space, and i think we're sold on an open plan thing with kitchen.

Basically, as long as the plasma and the surround speakers fit, i'll be happy!

Got a nice tax rebate yesterday as well as i've only worked a bit of the year in NZ, but unfortunately that's going straight to the kitty for the house purchase fees..grrr.

I am back on the fitness trail, after eating too many Hell pizzas despite going to the gym and playing squash. Have also stopped eating Willy Wonka's chocolate bars. I've maxed out at 96kg and now have 6kg to go before end of year, onwards and downards!.

Aside from houses and weight loss that's about it for now.

new friends - by application only

We interviewed some new friends on Friday over a curry. After getting an email application from Carin and Jim (www.carinandjim.blogspot.com), they successfully passed. They've recently emigrated from England (4 weeks ago) and listed 42 reasons why we should be their friends, how could we resist? ....

1.  We live in Auckland.
2.  We can talk about Leeds and give you a chance to relive your student youth.
3.   I think you're funny and can boost your ego.
4.  I'm whiter than you and will make you look tanned.
5.  I'm fatter than Annabel and will make her feel good.
6.  I'm ginger and will make you feel grateful that you're not.
7.  I'm older than you and will make you feel young.
8.  I make up funny songs too (e.g. the classic "I'm not a man, I'm a Doberman")
9.  Jim plays the guitar and can jam with you, man.
10. We've got a nice motor and can take you out.
11.  We've been round South Island 3 times and can help plan your trip.
12.  We like curry.
13.  We like films.
14.  We're BIG fans of Curb Your Enthusiasm.
15. Ditto The Secret Life of Us.
16. Ditto Kath & Kim.
17.We like lots of your other films too.
18.  We've got DVDs and CDs on the high seas at the mo, gagging to be copied when they get here.
19.  We can understand your accent (probably).
20.  We went to a wedding in Limavady once.
21.  As a "social entrepreneur", we're a new proposition.
22.  I hugely admire your site and need helping making mine work!
23.  We'll laugh at your jokes (even if they're not funny).
24.  We can discuss philosophy, politics and other twaddle.
25.  Jim could join you at the gym on the keep fit quest.
26.  I like Annabel's wedding shoes.
27.  I know the words to Button Moon, Rupert the Bear and the original Um Bongo advert.
28.  I write poetry too.
29.  We've all been to Hull and back.
30.  Jim's wedding outfit was remarkably similar to yours!
31.  Pancakes are good.
32.  Jim thinks pies and beer are good.
33.  We're an old married couple too.
34.  I've got two pussies you can stroke if you like.
34a.  Their names are Blackcat and Boo.
35.  I'm a speccy 4 eyes too (although I wear contacts).
36.  We'll understand your cultural references.
37.  Together, we can speculate on what happened to the A in Weet-bix.
38.  Jim could mix up your songs like Mr. Moby and make you an international superstar.
39.  I'm sure you'll have been over the Carrick-a-rede rope bridge too.
40.  We'll let you win when we play evil capitalist NZ Monopoly.
41.  We're nice.
42.  You've probably nowt better to do.

get your motor running..

At the age of 33, i'm finally on the road to becoming a fully fledged motor vehicle driver! The first stage in NZ involves passing a theory test, which i did last Wednesday. In 6 months i take my first practical test, to get a restricted license which i'm hoping to get just before we go on our big South Island tour.

nz election advertising

There's quite a few nifty billboards springing up across central Auckland for the National Party. You can guess who they represent by glancing at the poster below, won't take long. Reminds me of the Saatchi and Saatchi stuff for Tories in UK a few years back.

Will add some more up soon, my fav is one that says TAX on labour side and CUT on national side, so simple. Oh, and there another more right wing party called Act that has put themselves as yellow on the right, with SPIN for labour, TALK for national and ACT for themselves.

I can't vote unforunately, as i'm still waiting for the immigration people to sort out my permanent residency application. I'm going to have NZ citizenship this time next year. Will get the passport so i can travel to Australia easily (no visas etc.) and NZ is one of the few countries that allows you to hold dual citizenship so i can keep my UK passport as well.
