a fond farewell

Yesterday, we were planning to have a barbecue for friends but as per usual it rained most of the day. Nibbles and drinks at our place were followed by a fab meal at The Lodge in Harlesden, followed by more drinks.

A little brouhaha was caused as we auctioned our bicycles off to the highest bidder. Auction fever reached epic proportions with Chris Winchester the eventual victor (sorry Ben). All differences were resolved over chocolate cake and hugs as the evening drew to a close.

We're both really looking forward to seeing everyone safe, sound and well in Jan 2005 for our wedding and wish everyone else love, light and happiness. A special thanks to Marco for being such a great friend and colleague over the last few years.

One more night in London, and then off we pop to Auckland via Bangkok and Sydney. All quite emotional, with fear and excitement in equal measure. Life is great.

Quitte la maison. Bon Voyage!

The purchase of the bikes was the beginning of a tortuous but ultimately rather romantic journey across London.

I'll be back to post the details but in summary the journey from Willesden Junction to Balham (as the crow flies a distance of about 6 miles) took from 11:30pm on Saturday to 7:30am on Sunday and involved carrying two bikes and two guitar amplifiers on and off 5 trains and up or down 20 flights of stairs. Nikky and I also got to watch the sun rise on a platform at Wimbledon station, and whilst spending the night on a platform in Wimbledon station is not something I would recommend as a regular activity, seeing in the dawn with your fiancee is a wonderful experience whereever you are :) (K & A take note!)

I will return to give the gory details.

BTW, sorry Ben. You may find some consolation in the fact that a couple of days later I tried to ride Keith's bike into work to get it serviced in Brixton - but the brakes were knackered so I nearly got squished by a car... The bruises have all gone now though :D

Later kiwi-type dudes.
- Chris
